How does cellar ceiling insulation work?

The ceiling above an unheated cellar separates the warm living or office area from the cold basement. With cellar ceiling insulation, insulation boards are glued or dowelled to the underside of this ceiling so that heat from the ground floor no longer escapes into the cellar. Typical insulation thicknesses are 8 to 14 cm, using mineral wool of thermal conductivity group 035 to 040 or XPS rigid foam. This lowers the ceiling's U-value from 1.2 to 1.8 to about 0.25 W/(m²·K). Since the temperature difference between ground floor and cellar, at around 10 K, is only about half that to the outside air, the saving per square metre is lower than for facade or roof; on the other hand, the intervention is simple, clean and usually completed in one to two days. A noticeable side benefit is warmer floors on the ground floor.

Which buildings benefit from cellar ceiling insulation?

Suitable are detached houses, apartment buildings with underground car parks and office buildings with an unheated cellar, sufficient ceiling height and dry conditions. In low cellar rooms, the remaining headroom limits the insulation thickness; higher-performance insulation materials or a reduced thickness help here. Pipes, cables and downstand beams on the underside of the ceiling must be insulated around or relocated. If the cellar itself is heated or used as living space, cellar ceiling insulation is not appropriate; perimeter insulation of the cellar walls is then an option.

What does cellar ceiling insulation actually deliver?

The saving is 5 to 12 % of heating energy demand. For a building with 120 m² of cellar ceiling, the saving is around 6,000 kWh of natural gas per year, equivalent to about 1.2 t of CO2. Costs are 35 to 70 €/m², with a payback period of 8 to 15 years over a 40-year service life. Together with top-floor ceiling insulation, cellar ceiling insulation is one of the classic quick wins of a staged refurbishment that can be implemented without scaffolding and without touching the facade.

Worked example

A residential building with 120 m² of cellar ceiling above an unheated cellar is to be energetically improved with minimal effort. The uninsulated concrete ceiling has a U-value of 1.5 W/(m²·K); the gas heating operates at 90 % efficiency, and the location has 3,500 heating degree days. After gluing on 12 cm insulation boards, the U-value is 0.25 W/(m²·K). Because the cellar, with a temperature difference of around 10 K, is only about half as cold as the outside air, a temperature difference factor of 0.5 is applied in addition to the correction factor of 0.85. The calculation is: 120 × (1.5 − 0.25) × 3,500 × 0.024 / 0.90 × 0.85 × 0.5 = 5,950 kWh/a. The building saves around 6,000 kWh of natural gas per year and about 1.2 t of CO2, at a cost of about 4,200 to 8,400 €.

Mineral wool boards are cheaper than XPS rigid foam, but XPS is less sensitive to moisture. How thick should cellar ceiling insulation be?

What is the difference between cellar ceiling insulation and perimeter insulation?

Cellar ceiling insulation insulates the ceiling between the unheated cellar and the heated ground floor from below; the cellar stays cold. Perimeter insulation, by contrast, insulates the earth-contact cellar walls from outside and brings the cellar into the heated envelope. Perimeter insulation is considerably more complex because excavation and waterproofing are required, and is worthwhile mainly with a heated cellar or when drainage refurbishment is due anyway.
